What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.25
──> Maintenance Release
ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.25 contains a fix for an
obscure problem with Internal ZIP data compression. (See the
file ZPROWIN.REV for a description of this problem.) A few
of the dialog boxes and screens have also been given a "face-
lift".
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.24
──> Maintenance Release
ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.24 fixes a problem where an
error message such as "Unknown PKZIP Error" would occur when
attempting to launch one of the external compressors (ARJ,
LHA, PKZIP, or PKUNZIP) under Windows 95. (This was due to a
3rd party library that returned random faulty exit codes from
the executing DOS program.) A few cosmetic issues were also
addressed with the ZIP'R Pro interface.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.23
──> Maintenance Release
ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.23 fixed a problem where the
PIF files (PKZIP.PIF, PKUNZIP.PIF, ARJ.PIF, and LHA.PIF) were
not being used when executing one of the external
compressors. This problem would also cause any exit code
from the external compressor (PKZIP.EXE, PKUNZIP.EXE,
ARJ.EXE, or LHA.EXE) to be lost, and consequently, not
reported to the user.
This version also adds keyboard quick-key support to all of
the dialog boxes to allow keyboard users to use key
combinations for highlighting the various controls.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.22
──> Maintenance Release
ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.22 fixes a problem where an
error message would be displayed when attempting to launch
a program under Windows 95 (beta version). Another minor
problem was fixed where users with under 37.5 megabytes of
free space on their hard drive may have received an error
message when attempting to decompress a program. For a
complete list of revisions, see the file ZPROWIN.REV.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.21
──> Maintenance Release / Minor Feature Enhancements!
ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.21 adds a smooth XWindows
feel to the interface, automatically highlighting the program
button that is displayed beneath the mouse cursor.
Page 1
A problem was fixed where an error "EGPFault (GPF)" could
occur immediately after compressing a large program. (The
compressed file was created accurately, but the program files
were left without being deleted.) This problem has been
fixed. Our internal beta-testing created a compressed file
containing the Microsoft Office Suite (including PowerPoint,
Word, Excel, and Access). The uncompressed size was
77,807,033 bytes in size (in 668 files), and the compressed
file was 33,659,828 bytes in size, - a 57% compression ratio!
A "Confirm Before Launching Program" option was added to
allow users to specify whether or not ZIP'R Pro should
display a confirmation prompt before launching a program. A
few minor cosmetic/interface issues were also addressed. For
a complete list of changes, see the file ZPROWIN.REV.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.20
──> New Interface! Feature Enhancements!
STSI is proud to announce the release of ZIP'R Pro For
Windows Version 2.20. This version adds an entirely new
interface, complete with status screens, pop-up bubble-help,
user customization of icons, and more. Other safety-checks
and enhancements were added to the internal compression
routines. See the file ZPROWIN.REV for more information.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.19
──> Problem Fix For Version 2.18!
A problem that was introduced in version 2.18 of ZIP'R Pro
For Windows has been fixed. If a user attempted to create a
new file using Internal ZIP compression, ZIP'R Pro would
create a 22-byte (empty) ZIP file, and would delete the
program files. (STSI has attempted to eliminate the
distribution of version 2.18, and requests that all users
immediately upgrade to the newest version.) Other problems
were fixed and a couple of safety checks were added. See the
file ZPROWIN.REV for more information.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.18
──> Maintenance Release
ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.18 fixes a problem introduced
in version 2.17 where registered users could not enter their
full registration number in the registration number field.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.17
──> Maintenance Release
ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.17 is a maintenance release.
This version contains a fix for a problem where attempting to
execute multiple instances of the same program (on a network
or under a multitasker) could cause an intermittent problem
Page 2
where the first instance would not wait for the second
instance to close before attempting to compress the selected
program. Another problem has been fixed where ZIP'R Pro
would intermittently issue a General Protection Fault (GPF)
error when attempting to compress a program. (This was
introduced in version 2.16, and was somewhat difficult to
reproduce.) The cleanup procedure (Cleanup Files) has also
been enhanced and is much faster.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.16
──> Major Code Changes!
This version of ZIP'R Pro For Windows is considerably
better than previous versions. The code has been reworked
and rewritten to eliminate the ZProcessor. Internal ZIP code
is now native to Windows (ie, it does not need to launch a
DOS session). Several problems have been fixed, and users
should find this version easier to set up and use than
previous versions. Users are strongly encouraged to read the
file ZPROWIN.REV to view a list of changes and revisions, and
also read the file ZPROWIN.DOC. The documentation file has
been updated to reflect the latest changes, and contains
important information about the new PIF files.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.15
──> New Improved Doc File!
The documentation file (ZPROWIN.DOC) has been reworked,
enhanced, and expanded. A new tutorial section is included
to walk users through setting up their initial program in
ZIP'R Pro. The Questions & Answer section has been expanded
to answer questions concerning mouse problems in Windows and
similar issues. A new section has been added to explain
potential concerns when creating a compressed file on a
floppy diskette. Both registered and non-registered users
are strongly encouraged to read the new doc file (or at
least the new sections that were added).
──> Several Improvements & Changes!
When executing ZIP'R Pro or launching an application from
within ZIP'R Pro, the about box is no longer displayed for
registered users, to eliminate unnecessary mouse clicks. A
ZPW file limit of 5 has been set up for unregistered users.
This will help encourage many of our non-registered users to
"get legal". An extra option has been added to the "Floppy
Options" page to allow multiple compressed files to be stored
on one diskette. Before using this feature, READ THE DOCS,
especially the section on "Compressing To Floppy Disks".
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.14
──> Problem Fix For Parameters With Windows Applications.
Version 2.14 of ZIP'R Pro For Windows fixes a problem where
the Parameters line in the ZPW file was not being passed to
Page 3
Windows applications. (This wasn't a problem with DOS
applications.)
──> Change In Memory Requirements For ZProcessor.
This version of ZIP'R Pro For Windows also contains some
changes in memory requirements for the ZProcessor. First,
the code size has been reduced by about 20K, which should
reduce potential "Out of memory" errors when compressing
and/or decompressing using Internal ZIP. Also, the
ZPROCESS.PIF file has been modified. The "KB Required" field
has been changed from 350K to 512K. If you want to reduce
this value, please read the new section in the docs, entitled
"Modifying the Zprocess.Pif File". The new section explains
why 512K is necessary for Internal ZIP, and how to decrease
it if you are using one of the other available compressors.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.13
──> New "Child Process Checking" Feature!
Added a "Child Process Checking" feature to the routine that
executes Windows applications. This new feature checks all
the current Windows applications to make sure that the
application ZIP'R Pro launched and any secondary applications
launched by the main application are completely closed down
before attempting to recompress the main program.
As an example, one of our users reported a problem with
Microsoft PowerPoint v4.0 not working properly with ZIP'R
Pro. Apparently, PowerPoint hands control off to a separate
file and terminates the main POWERPNT.EXE file. Once ZIP'R
Pro detected that the main EXE file was no longer in use, it
tried to recompress the entire program, even though a sub-
program was actually running. As another example, we found
that attempting to print a long document from Ami Pro 3.0
causes a similar dilemma. When Ami Pro terminates, Ami Print
(AMIPRINT.EXE) continues to remain on the desktop until all
of the data has been sent to the printer. If Ami Pro is
closed while the printing process is still running, ZIP'R Pro
would again detect that the main application had closed, and
would try to recompress it without waiting for AMIPRINT.EXE
to finish.
To address these problems, we have added an option called
"Child Process Checking". This feature (which is enabled by
default) detects when a program launches a "child"
application. For example, ZIP'R Pro is now able to detect
when Ami Pro launches Ami Print. Before starting the
compression process, ZIP'R Pro makes sure that BOTH Ami Pro
and Ami Print have been closed.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.12
──> Maintenance Update
ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.12 fixes a minor problem with
internal ZIP compression where the compressed file would not
Page 4
be created in the correct location if the compressed file
directory was different than the program (parent) directory.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.11
──> Maintenance Update
ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.11 includes a complete manual
for user reference. Users are asked to read the manual prior
to placing a tech support phone call. Please note:
Information available in the manual is also available in the
ZIP'R Pro help system. This version also addresses a few
minor issues with the Advanced user interface. For a
complete list of revisions, see the file ZPROWIN.REV.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.10
──> Maintenance Update
Version 2.10 of ZIP'R Pro For Windows fixes a problem with
internal ZIP compression where the error "Could not erase the
file nnn.ZIP" would occur after compressing a program. For
more information, see the file ZPROCESS.REV.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.09
──> Maintenance Update
Version 2.09 of ZIP'R Pro For Windows is a maintenance
release. New library updates have been implemented for the
compression routines. A complete list of changes can be
found in the file ZPROWIN.REV.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.08
──> Maintenance Update
Version 2.08 of ZIP'R Pro For Windows is a maintenance
release. A significant problem was fixed with Internal ZIP
compression. When attempting to decompress the ZIP file, an
error #5, "file access denied" would occur. A full
explanation of this problem and its source can be found in
the file ZPROWIN.REV. A couple of obscure problems were
found and addressed, including a Windows-NT "file access
denied" bug.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.07
──> Maintenance Update
Version 2.07 of ZIP'R Pro For Windows is a maintenance
release. A significant problem was fixed where the DOS
screen would be filled with garbage characters immediately
after trying to execute ZIP'R Pro. This behavior occurred if
the Video Display was set to Direct screen writes or Auto
Page 5
Detect with an EGA or VGA monitor (and only if the prelog
screen was supposed to be displayed). The direct screen
writing was being done from an overlaid unit, which called an
assembly language OBJ file, thus causing corruption on the
screen. This screen writing procedure has been moved into a
non-overlaid unit.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.06
──> Maintenance Update
Version 2.06 of ZIP'R Pro For Windows is a maintenance
release. The file ERRORS.OPL has been removed. All error
messages are now contained in the ZPROCESS.EXE file. The
ZProcessor has been overlaid, hence the addition of the file
ZPROCESS.OVR. This was done to reduce the memory
requirements needed to perform operations, especially
internal ZIP compression and decompression. Previously,
users with memory limited systems (less than 512K free before
ZIP'R Pro was launched) who chose to use internal ZIP
compression would experience an error #8 (insufficient
memory) when compressing programs. Now, users with as
little as 465K free (before ZIP'R Pro is launched) can use
internal ZIP compression.
IMPORTANT: Although ZIP'R Pro only requires 465K of free
conventional memory, you must have at least enough
conventional memory to execute the program that is being
launched through ZIP'R Pro. For example, if your program
requires 540K of free conventional memory, you must have
at least 550K of free memory before launching ZIP'R Pro.
(ZIP'R Pro's overhead, along with
the secondary command processor consume about 10K of
memory.)
On the other hand, if your program only requires 400K of
free conventional memory, you must have at least 465K of
free memory, since this is the amount required by ZIP'R
Pro, in order to operate properly.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.05
──> Missing File Has Been Found!
The file ERRORS.OPL which was inadvertently not included in
the previous release has been included in this release.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.04
──> Maintenance Update
Version 2.04 of ZIP'R Pro For Windows is a maintenance
release. A significant problem has been fixed concerning
ZIP'R Pro's overhead when launching programs DOS programs
from the Windows environment. Some programs may have
reported "Out of memory" errors due to this problem. For a
detailed explanation, see the file ZPROWIN.REV.

What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.03
──> Maintenance Release!
Version 2.03 of ZIP'R Pro For Windows contains a couple of
minor problem fixes, and minor changes to comply with ASP
guidelines. STSI
is now an approved author of the ASP!
──> Maintenance Release!
Version 2.02 of ZIP'R Pro For Windows contains a major
problem fix for internal ZIP compression. When attempting to
recompress a program using the Update option, users would
receive an Error Number 5, (File Access Denied). The
compressed file had been marked as read-only, and therefore
could not be initialized for any other action. This error
condition did not appear when using a Novell network, so
internal beta-testing efforts did not catch the problem.
Added code to make sure the compressed file's attributes were
properly set before any action to the file is attempted. For
a complete list of changes, please see the file ZPROWIN.REV.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.01
──> Maintenance Release!
Version 2.01 of ZIP'R Pro For Windows contains an enhanced
and updated help file, incorporating graphics images. There
have also been a few problem fixes. For a complete list of
changes, please see the file ZPROWIN.REV.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 2.00
──> Major Upgrade!
Version 2.00 of ZIP'R Pro For Windows is a major upgrade.
The ZIF Editor has been integrated into ZIP'R Pro, making it
much easier to create, edit, and execute files. ZIP'R Pro
now uses a complete Windows interface. When ZPROWIN.EXE is
executed, it attaches the .ZPW files in the ZIP'R Pro sub-
directory to icons, displays them within the limits of the
ZIP'R Pro window, and allows users to double-click on them to
execute a program. Simply right-click on an icon to edit the
settings of the associated file. Three separate interfaces
make the use of ZIP'R Pro easier than ever. (The file
ZIFPROW.EXE has been eliminated from the distribution files,
and should no longer be used to edit .ZPW files! All editing
should be done using ZIPRPRO.EXE.) ZIP'R Pro can still be
used on the Windows command line in the form "ZPROWIN.EXE
PROGRAM", where PROGRAM specifies the name of the .ZPW file.
This will execute PROGRAM without displaying the new
interface.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 1.03
──> Built-In Compression!
Version 1.03 of ZIP'R Pro For Windows contains new built-in
Page 7
compression, compatible with PKZIP 2.0. This makes it
possible to use ZIP'R Pro without needing any outside
compression program. The built-in compression creates files
with a .ZIP extension, and can decompress files created with
PKZIP 2.0. (Likewise, files created with the internal
compression can be viewed and decompressed using PKZIP 2.0.)
──> New User Levels!
The ZIF Editor Pro now contains 3 specific user levels, to
allow beginner, intermediate, or advanced users to customize
the way the ZIF Editor works. Advanced users will have
access to all the settings previously available.
Intermediate users will have a scaled-down version, with
access to some of the more sought-after features. Beginners
will use a bare-bones version, making it as easy to use as
possible. A more attractive color scheme is now being used,
and all drop-down boxes have been replaced with radio buttons
to make the interface easier to use, especially for those who
may not have a mouse.
──> Enhanced Trapping For Decompression Errors
ZIP'R Pro now allows the ability to recover from "overwrite"
error messages generated by PKZIP and ARJ. Previous versions
of ZIP'R Pro would terminate execution if any error was
detected. Now, ZIP'R Pro will detect if the error was
generated by an overwrite warning, and will offer the user
the ability to continue program execution. For more
information, see the file ZPROWIN.REV or the troubleshooting
section of the ZPROWIN.DOC documentation file.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 1.02
──> Maintenance Release
Version 1.02 is a maintenance release, fixing a bug in the
ZIF
Editor Pro. The Compression Paths screen (available from the
ZIP'R Pro Settings menu) was not being displayed at all when
this option was selected.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 1.01
──> Cleanup Files option now supported in the ZIF Editor!
The Cleanup Files options, located in the ZIP'R Pro Settings
sub-menu of the ZIF Editor Pro now allows the cleanup, or
removal, of left-over signal files. For an explanation of
this option and why it may be needed, see the documentation.
What's New in ZIP'R Pro For Windows Version 1.00
──> Initial Release of ZIP'R Pro For Windows!
STSI proudly announces the release of ZIP'R Pro For Windows
Version 1.00 into the shareware market! ZIP'R Pro For
Windows will allow Windows users to compress Windows-based
(and DOS-based) programs using PKZIP/PKUNZIP, ARJ, or LHA,
in the Windows environment. Unlike ZIP'R Pro For DOS, the
Page 8
Windows version will actually launch Windows applications,
while giving you the flexibility of the DOS version, such as
compressing programs to floppy diskettes, etc. The ZIF
Editor Pro for Windows is actually a DOS-based program,
allowing us to keep the DOS and Windows versions up-to-date
with each other, while the main program (ZPROWIN.EXE) is a
Windows-based program, allowing the launching of Windows-
based (and DOS-based) programs. We would like to encourage
all users (registered and non-registered) to offer comments
and suggestions for future enhancements to ZIP'R Pro For
Windows. (See the file ZPROWIN.DOC for details about how to
contact us.)
